How to Be a Wonderful Audience Member
Attending The Nutcracker is a special experience! When the curtain rises, you become part of the magic. The dancers, musicians, and crew have worked for months to prepare this performance — and your attention, kindness, and applause help bring it to life.
Shared courtesy of North Central Ballet, this guide helps students prepare for their visit to the theatre.
Reviewing these “Golden Rules” will help your class enjoy the ballet to its fullest while understanding how to be excellent audience members.
Before the Performance
Arrive early and find your seat quietly.
Take a moment to look at your program and read about the story or dancers.
Turn off cell phones, smart watches, and anything that lights up or makes noise.
During the Ballet
Watch carefully and notice how the dancers tell the story without words.
Listen to the music — it helps tell you how the characters feel!
Sit still so others can see and hear.
Clap at the end of each dance you enjoy, and especially when the curtain closes.
Remember: photos and videos are not allowed during performances.
After the Show
Clap, cheer, or even say “bravo!” to show your appreciation.
Share your favorite part with your family or classmates.
Think about what the music, costumes, or story made you feel.
For Teachers
Encourage students to discuss how live theatre is different from watching television or a movie.
Ask:
How does it feel knowing the dancers can hear the audience?
Why do manners matter in a theatre?
What can we do to help the performers do their best?
